From concept to placement: Brighton tattoo artist’s advice on getting inked
Alessia shares valuable insights on the process of getting a tattoo, from choosing the design and placement to ensuring customer satisfaction and aftercare.
Alessia Lo Piccolo is an Italian tattoo artist known for her distinctive fine line style and commitment to sustainability. She established Alma Studio in Brighton, seamlessly blending her passion for art with eco-friendly practices.
Alessia’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the tattoo process to Alma Studio’s overall operation. Her dedication to eco-friendly practices serves as an inspiration to others in the industry, encouraging both artists and clients to make choices that align with their values and preferences.
During a recent interview, Alessia shared valuable insights on the process of getting a tattoo, from choosing the design and placement to ensuring customer satisfaction and aftercare. She emphasised the importance of thoughtful decision-making and thorough preparation.
“When booking a tattoo, it’s crucial to have a general idea of the placement,” Alessia explained.
“For custom pieces, knowing the exact location helps create a design that fits perfectly on your body. Clients often send pictures of the placement and a general idea of the design, which I then adapt to suit their body shape and preferences.”
Alessia also highlighted the importance of flexibility during the tattoo session.
“Even if you’re unsure about the size or exact placement, there’s always time in the studio to make adjustments. I print several sizes and let clients see how each looks on their body before we finalise the design.”
A key aspect of Alessia’s approach is ensuring customer comfort and satisfaction.
“I always give clients time to look in the mirror and make sure they’re happy with the placement and size. If they’re unsure, we can reschedule. It’s better to take the time and get it right than to rush and regret it later.”
The tattoo placement is carefully mapped out with the customer to find the ideal spot where the tattoo shines and moves well with the skin.
Choosing the right clothes for a tattoo session is another point Alessia stressed.
“Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the tattoo area. For example, if you’re getting a tattoo on your ribs, you might need to remove your shirt entirely. Also, wear something that you don’t mind getting ink on, just in case.”
Aftercare is crucial for maintaining the quality of a tattoo. Alessia recommends using specialised vegan products.
“I use brands like Stories and Ink, which are vegan and perfect for tattoo aftercare. It’s important to avoid products with perfumes or additives that can cause infections.
“For the first two weeks, apply the cream two to three times a day.”
To keep a tattoo looking fresh over the years, Alessia insists on proper care during the initial healing period and to keep the tattoo protected.
“The first month or two is critical. Avoid direct sunlight and use high SPF protection if you’re outdoors. Keep the area moisturised and consider using purified water to avoid exposure to harsh minerals,” Alessia advises.
For those considering a tattoo, Alessia’s advice is clear: take your time, do your research, and choose an artist whose style and values resonate with you.
“A tattoo is a lifelong commitment. Make sure it’s something you’ll love forever.”
By combining her artistic talent with a commitment to sustainability, Alessia is not only creating beautiful tattoos but also paving the way for a more eco-friendly future in the industry. Her studio in Brighton stands as a testament to the possibilities of integrating passion with purpose, inspiring others to follow suit.
